Diverticulitis is a condition in which small pockets or pouches (divericuli) form and push outward through weak spots in the wall of your colon (large intestine). Most people with diverticulosis do not have symptoms or complications. Treatments for diverticulosis include high fiber diet, medicines, and probiotics.
Diverticulitis is the most common complication of diverticulosis. In diverticulitis, one or a few of the pouches (diverticuli) become inflamed and cause an infection.
In complicated and or acute diverticulitis, inflammation may result in fever, formation of an abscess or fistula, bleeding or bowel obstruction or perforation.
Treatment options for diverticulitis might include rest, oral antibiotics, and a liquid diet. Surgery may be necessary If you experience recurrent episodes of diverticulitis.
Our digestive health team will listen, explain and work together to treat these conditions.
