Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

Welcoming a child into the family is an exciting event and we are glad that John Muir Health has been a part of your momentous occasion.

If your baby received care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at our Walnut Creek Medical Center, we know your excitement may be accompanied with questions about your baby’s developmental future.

That is why John Muir Health is pleased to offer High Risk Infant Follow-Up Services to facilitate assessing and following high-risk infants after they leave the hospital.

  • Early evaluation and diagnosis helps each infant reach his or her full developmental potential.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment of developmental delays may prevent or lessen long-term problems.
  • We invite your family to take advantage of the resources available for your baby.

High Risk Infant Follow Up Services

Our expert team of specialist and nurses perform physical and neurological evaluations and communicate their findings with you and your baby's pediatrician. During your visits with us, you will have opportunities to discuss your baby's progress and talk about any concerns you may be having. The purpose of the visits is to identify developmental delays early to prevent or lessen long-term problems associated with prematurity and serious newborn illness; recommendations for additional referrals to specialty care are included when needed.

Evaluation Process

We provide your family with three evaluation visits. The first visit should take place when your baby is approximately six months adjusted age. Additional visits are highly recommend when your is 12-month adjusted age and again after two years adjusted age. During these visits, our expert team will evaluate:

  • Neuromotor Function
  • Muscle Strength
  • Growth and Nutrition
  • Language Development
  • Social Interaction
  • Developmental Milestones

The results from these evaluations are discussed with the team, your family, and your baby's pediatrician. This cooperative relationship allows us to facilitate the correct action plan and referral process, giving guidance to your family and helping your baby reach his or her full developmental potential.

Qualifications and Visit Prices

High-Risk Infant Follow up Services is for babies who have received care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and meet certain criteria to qualify. Your baby may qualify if he or she:

  • weighed less than 3 lbs. 5 oz. at birth.
  • was born prematurely (less than 32-weeks gestation).
  • experienced other medical conditions during your stay at our Walnut Creek Medical Center.

Most health insurance plans will cover the cost of the appointments. We will work with the pediatrician and health insurance plans to obtain authorization when required.
